LBIF Discusses Bay-to-Table on Science Saturday

Barnegat Bay and nearby areas are a very productive area for a variety of seafood. The most popular fish species are striped bass as well as tog, sea bass and fluke. And let’s not forget scallops, claims, oysters and crab!

On Friday, Long Beach Island Foundation (LBIF) will discuss commercial fishing and cook fresh seafood from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the Foundation’s main building.

Did you know that Viking Village in Barnegat Light is one of the East Coast’s most productive commercial fishing seaports? Join them for this bay to table conversation. Karter Larson will tell many entertaining tales while you will learn how your favorite fish is harvested in the Atlantic Ocean. Chef Ian will teach you how to prepare the fresh seafood you buy or catch with hands-on cooking demonstrations and delicious samples to enjoy.

The Long Beach Island Foundation of the Arts and Sciences promotes the arts and sciences on Long Beach Island and in the surrounding communities by enlightening, educating, and stimulating thought and discussion about current trends in the arts and sciences and by providing broad educational and cultural programs for all ages.

Science Saturday at the LBIF tackles today’s most pressing scientific, environmental, and sustainability issues that directly affect our shore community and the Barnegat Bay. Science Saturdays are interactive and informative hands-on presentations in an informal atmosphere.

Farm-to-table, or in this case, “Bay-to-Table” is a phrase that can mean different things to different people. At its heart, farm (or bay)-to-table means that the food on the table came directly from a specific farm (or fishery), without going through a store, market, or distributor along the way.

Admission to Science Saturdays – organized by the LBIF Science Committee – is free for Foundation members. A $5 donation per person is requested from all other attendees.

LBIF is located at 120 Long Beach Blvd. in Loveladies.
