There are plans to add 3 new surfing beaches to Long Beach Township.  The township currently has 19 surfing beaches.  Check out the waves by clicking on the picture below for live web-cam pictures.

Surfing only beaches are selected on three criteria: adequate distance along the jetties, to allow a reasonable safety buffer zone separating surfers from swimmers and surfers from jetties; beaches must be relatively less crowded when compared with other township beaches and, of course, must have a decent sandbar for good wave break.

The township's 12 miles of divided beach -- spanning two-thirds of the Long Beach Island coastline -- account for 10 percent of The Jersey Shore's 122 miles of sandy beach. The township has a beach patrol of 169 lifeguards who guard beaches from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. From June 21 through Sept. 1, two lifeguards are stationed at each of the townships' 52 beaches.

Bay beaches are available for those who want to swim in calm, shallow waters. Bayview Park, located on 68th Street in Brant Beach, has bathroom facilities. Another bay beach is located at Beach Haven Terrace on New Jersey Avenue and 131st Street. Summer windsurfing is available at Brant Beach bay area. A seasonal fee is required.

Access the beach via more than 160 street ends. The beaches are family-oriented, with many vacationers driving in from Philadelphia or New York. The beaches are more or less flat and broad at the southern end, falling off more quickly at the northern end. And the township's southern section is more commercialized than North Beach and Loveladies in the secluded northern end.

Surfers flock to Holyoke Avenue in Beach Haven and other areas not designated for swimming -- all permitted at the discretion of lifeguards. In Surf City, the designated surfing area is between North First and North Third streets.

See of the ‘surfs' up' from your own home:  Here's a 6 bedroom, 2 bath duplex located on Sand Dune Lane, Long Beach Township...only 1.04 million.
